Dear Panellists,

My daughter is in her mid 20’s. Very recently she has gone through a rough time losing her job and breaking up with her boyfriend at the same time. It’s been a challenge for her to find a new job and naturally, she’s rather down.

She went to her doctor and he quickly diagnosed her with depression and immediately provided her with a prescription for antidepressants. I was in disbelief. Whilst she is going through a bad time, I’m pretty certain prescribing drugs is not the way to go.

How do I help my daughter comprehend that it’s just an understandably tough time she’s going through and with a little bit of work, and some support and encouragement from her dad and me she will overcome it all? In my mind, what’s happening to her is quite simply just life as my dad would say. Heaven knows my generation and my dad’s generation understood life doesn’t always through you roses and accolades.

How can this generation begin to learn resilience when the medical industry seems geared to just throw drugs and labels at the problem? How do we change this? I should add my daughter has never had any mental health issues before.
